Cedar Falls Blue Zones Project

The Blue Zones Project is a community well-being improvement initiative designed to make healthy choices easier through permanent changes to environment, policy, and social networks. Its mission is to lead and ignite community-by-community well-being transformation, where people live and work together in Blue Zones Communities for a better life. By taking an environmental approach to well-being improvement, we have an opportunity to create real change in communities. This kind of change sparks people’s deepest desires to live well while giving them the tools to do so. For more information about the Cedar Falls Blue Zones project, contact Sue Beach, Cedar Falls Blue Zones Community Program Manager.

Cedar Falls Community Garden

The community garden of Cedar Falls began with a partnership between the Green Iowa Americorp and a few community members, who through hard work, re-purposed flooded land owned by FEMA, transforming an area that would an "usable" area into a beautiful and purposeful area. The land, after city tillage, provided forty plots and both novice and expert gardeners signed up to grow their own food. The renters of the plots, individuals, families or civic groups each decided what to do with the produce, choosing either to consume it, give to neighbors or donate to the food bank, which by seasons end received a few hundred pounds. For the first year, the community garden of Cedar Falls was off to a fantastic start.
2011 brought more interest and demand for plots so twenty-five additional plots were added to provide people a place to grow vegetables, fruit and flowers in a community setting. The sixty-five plots were tended by dedicated gardeners who produced a bounty of produce despite the challenge of dependency on the rain barrels for water. This year we have a new garden location and once again. it is re-purposed land. With the city’s support, the gardeners are provided water which is a crucial element to the success and longevity of the gardens.

Silos & Smokestacks

The Mission:

Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area preserves and tells the story of American agriculture and its global significance through partnerships and activities that celebrate the land, people, and communities of the area.

Silos & Smokestacks and its partners interpret our heritage by using six themes. Each theme explores different aspects of agriculture. The themes help visitors interpret and experience the story many ways: in small towns and large cities; on trails and county roads; and through farms, natural areas, local museums and historical buildings.
